Job Summary:
The Metadata Librarian is responsible for managing and organizing the library's digital collections through the creation, maintenance, and enhancement of metadata. This role plays a crucial part in ensuring the accurate representation and discovery of library resources, enabling efficient information retrieval for users. The Metadata Librarian collaborates with various library staff and stakeholders to ensure the consistency, quality, and standardization of metadata across different systems and platforms.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Develop and implement metadata standards, policies, and procedures to ensure the effective organization and accessibility of digital resources.
2. Create, edit, and manage metadata records for library materials, including digital assets, electronic resources, catalog records, and other metadata schemas.
3. Enhance metadata records by applying controlled vocabularies, classification systems, and authority control techniques.
4. Collaborate with subject specialists, catalogers, and other library staff to ensure consistency and accuracy in metadata creation and maintenance.
5. Conduct regular quality control assessments of metadata records to identify and resolve any issues or inconsistencies.
6. Stay updated with emerging trends, best practices, and standards in metadata creation, digitization, and information organization.
7. Participate in the development and implementation of metadata-related projects and initiatives, including data migration, digitization projects, and metadata crosswalks.
8. Provide guidance and support to library staff regarding metadata creation, standards, and best practices.
9. Assist in the training and professional development of library staff in metadata-related activities.
10. Collaborate with external partners and vendors to ensure seamless metadata integration and interoperability.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
1. Master's degree in Library and Information Science or equivalent.
2. Strong knowledge and understanding of metadata standards and schemas, such as Dublin Core, MODS, MARC, and other emerging metadata frameworks.
3. Familiarity with metadata management tools, integrated library systems, and digital asset management systems.
4. Proficiency in using metadata editing software and tools, such as MarcEdit, OpenRefine, or similar applications.
5. Experience with metadata crosswalks and transformations.
6. Knowledge of controlled vocabularies, classification systems, and authority control practices.
7. Understanding of linked data principles and semantic web technologies.
8. Excellent attention to detail and ability to maintain accuracy while working with complex data.
9. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
10. Effective communication and collaboration skills to work with diverse stakeholders.
11. Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects and deadlines effectively.
12. Continuous learning mindset and willingness to stay updated with emerging trends and technologies in metadata management.
